General manager Tony Reagins said the Angels withdrew their offer to Mark Teixeira because it was time to address other roster matters.
However, no one should expect the roster to change much in the next few days.
Reagins said negotiations with reliever Brian Fuentes were continuing, but “nothing is imminent at this time,” and he said the Angels were not talking with free agent outfielders Milton Bradley, Bobby Abreu and Pat Burrell.
Of Adam Dunn, the free agent slugger, Reagins said. “We have talked to his representatives. Adam will not be an Angel.”
Reagins also told media outlets Tuesday that the Angels were also not pursuing Manny Ramirez.
An ESPN report Tuesday indicated Teixeira had agreed to play for the New York Yankees. The cost was reported to be more than $160 million over eight years. The Angels had offered exactly that.
“We wanted to show we were committed to improving our ballclub,” Reagins said of the decision to trade first baseman Casey Kotchman to Atlanta for Teixeira in July. “Our regret is that we didn’t win a world championship, but we have no other regrets.”

I’d like to formally announce that I’d would like to be a candidate for the Yankees managers job.
If Teixeira had to sign with the Yankees or the Red Sox, I’m glad that it was the Yankees. I wish Tex well, except against the Angels.
Well the Yankees are at it again, trying to buy a baseball championship.Typical Yankees as usual. Wouldn’t it be funny if they lost again in 2009 after spending all that money on players. When are the Yankees going to stop trying to always buy a championship. The Yankees are just losers and always will be no matter what they do!!
Bernie - count the world Championships the NY Yankess have - does that equate to losers? If so, time to go back to 2nd grade math.
Bernie:
I am no Yankee fan, but…
26 rings do not equal losers.
let me make sure i understand - No Tex, No Manny, No pursuit of Burrell, Abreau, and or Bradley, oh lets see no pursuit of Dunn - lose Frankie K get back maybe Fuentes - we had problems hitting last year and had more one run games than anybody - Mr. Reagins better be pursuing Peavy and .S.D’s 1st baseman to get some power to match up because the current line-up is not going to cut it come the regular season let alone the playoffs. Love Rivera, but he is not the answer nor an everyday player. Willits and Matthews Jr. are nice back-ups. We need two more big hitters that simple!
Everyone calm down. Nobody saw 2002 coming when the big off season saw Brad Fullmer and Kevin Apier added. Last years team won 100 games 1 run games withstanding. Trust the ownership their smarter than us when it comes to baseball.
Peavy and AG would be a nice holiday gift, though.
When Arte bought the team, he said he wanted to be the Yankees of the West Coast . How’s that going?
Reagins the so called GM has been in action for a short time and his decision making is that of a t-ball coach. We need a real GM not just a cheap imitation. Arte you said that you needed to make our team the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim to get more money to invest on the team. So invest owner invest.
For Angel Management, can you do one more thing with Borass? Please don’t sell him the seats right behind home plate. Give those seats to charity. Sell them to Al Queda. Even bring back Homer and Ribi to sit there. Do anything so we don’t have to look at that dishonest horses’ Borass every time the center field camera focuses in on every pitch.
Tell Borass that you have someone who is willing to pay 8 years in advance and 1 million per game for them. Every time I see his greedy smile I am reminded that a no talent player can do more damage to the game of baseball and pro sports, than players who love the game can do good. Only in America. Gosh, I hope New York goes bankrupt.
“Love Rivera, but he is not the answer nor an everyday player.”
Is that you Mike Scioscia?
“When Arte bought the team, he said he wanted to be the Yankees of the West Coast . How’s that going?”
The economy was a lot better back then. Right now it might be smarter to not spend a lot. A drop in ticket prices might be nice if they don’t add a starting pitcher though.
Besides, the Angels tried to sign Teix. The offer they were rumored to offer should be enough to get anyone. This is all about greed.
I was glad to see K Rod go. I am sorry that Tex won’t be an Angel. Congrats to the Angels for saying no to Boras and his band of spoiled brats. These players are making it impossible for the TRUE FANS to attend a game with their son. How many houses and cars do you guys need? I am tired of the rock star menatlity of these players, shut up and play ball! Sure Pete Rose bet on baseball but he was a hell of a lot more fun to watch than these modern day sally’s!
Reagins I remember when you used to sell peanuts. Go back to what you do best. you suck!!!!
Tex was even worth 8 yr $200 million…and the Angels would have had the one of the best lineups in baseball along with a deep bench.
Stop hating Boras and the players who strike it rich. Hating them would mean hating America and the capitalist system that has raised all of our standards of living.
Saving money now during an uncertain economic future is the best thing to do. Just maybe we will be in a much better position in the years ahead because of it! I think Mr. Moreno knows a few things about business.
Focus on bargain pitching. Raid Arizona’s pitchers and grab reliever Brandon Lyon (Type B) for two or three years and starter Randy Johnson (Type B) for one year. Two very good pitchers who can fill holes on the Angels and not cost any draft picks in return. And they can probably be had for just a bit more than Fuentes, without losing a first rounder.
Try being a GM of a team not named the Yankees. The Angels still need to budget for:
Vlad next year (or his replacement)
Extending Lackey past this year (or his replacement)
New contracts for several players (Figgins, Izturis, Napoli, Quinlan, Santana and Weaver) [not sure if these are correct or inclusive] or mess with salary arbitration
AND still need one or two relief pitchers, and a fifth starting pitcher
Another BIG BAT if all the bloggers have their way
AND don’t forget about the SIX draft picks before the second round of the draft – all of whom will demand a million or so dollars as signing bonuses.
The whole country is facing a very uncertain economic future. The Angel organization is facing tough decisions and I am glad they are being responsible with the financial health of the franchise.
I am a long time Angel fan, I mean I was, We fans are more intelligent than you think we are. Y ou COULD OF HAD FRANKIE back for 3 more million dollars by matching the 37 mil contract over the 3 yrs the mets gave. You were never serious about tex. admit it . You went for it all by renting tex and let key players walk now the team is much weaker it will be weaker
now that tex is gone , you stiff us fans by raising ticket prices and Manny you said wont be an angel or dunn, you know you cant win a championship with whats left on the free agent market?
so dont treat us like fools . how many of you angel fans agree with me? send emails like mine to arte and reagins and tim mead
and tell them thanks for charging us more for what seems like a
save money semi rebuilding year. SHAME ON YOUR MANAGEMENT Signed Jay
I for one won’t miss Tex. I would much rather use whatever availible money we have to build a team. One guy does not a team make. Unless you have unlimited money like it appears that NY has. Best team we love to hate. Wouldn’t mind seeing them go bust. I think we need some help hitting. I see us swinging for the fence just about every time we get up. Even Vlady needs a level swing. Figgins, GMJ, Vlady, and others could be alot more effective with a level swing. Less pop ups at key at bats. We could use some help coaching. Is Rod Carew out there? How about Ricky Henderson to help Figgins?
Reagins added that the Angels will not pursue free agents Manny Ramirez, Pat Burrell and Bobby Abreu. “We’re going to give our kids an opportunity to play,” Reagins said. “We signed Juan Rivera to a three-year deal, and we think, given at-bats, he can be a productive player.”
Good one Reagins….Rivera, Ramirez, Abreu, Burrell……same guy..LMAO
3.4 million in the stands, win the weak AL West and get killed yet again in the first round of the Playoffs. Get used to it Halo fans..It’s all that matters to Management. “It;s not personal, it’s business”.
But hey, they will still have “Big Bang Friday” for all of You that continue to “PAY” for this team. Im a former season ticket holder, who will only be watching them from time to time on TV, until they make me pay for that too.
Happy Holidays
TC: You’re already paying to watch them on TV, if you have cable or DirecTV.
How come the Angels cant get something going? Wow, Torie and Vlad thats it!! They should go get Dye, Peavy, Gonzalez, do something please!! Hey Tony, move some of your prospects. Oh Arte I though you wanted to be the Yankees of the West, We’ll be lucky to win the West next year.
Is it disappointing that we didn’t get Texeira….yes. I also believe that we could have a great first baseman as long as he gets playing time which is Kendry Morales. I believe as long as he gets at bats he can prove that he is a great hitter.
I’m amazed how many Angels fans out there seem to forget how the current economy is going to affect baseball in the coming year and likely beyond. I know its frustrating to lose out on some of these big names, but doing so by being financially irresponsible is just bad business. Allow other teams (Yankees) to overextend themselves and make smart business decisions. As noted above, we have a number of our key players with expiring contracts in the next few years and it is essential we not lose focus there in the pursuit of one guy for a king’s ransom.
I, for one, appreciate the common sense being displayed by Mr.’s Moreno and Reagins. Anyone out there taking them to task for their responsibility is just a naive fan who does not understand that you need to have the revenue streams to support crazy spending. The Yankees have revenue that the Angels do not and I am still wondering if their current spending might not be beyond even their significant resources in the current recession.
If Kendry Morales and Juan Rivera get a full season of at bats next year its very conceivable that they both are capable of yielding 25 - 30 home runs, and 80 plus rbi’s each. Reagins and Moreno will look like geniuses, and fiscally responsible in very uncertain economic times. Give them a break for allowing the kids to have a chance. That has always been the Angels philosophy in the post Disney era and it has resulted in continuously winning teams, and there is no reason to think that it won’t continue. Besides, Arte and Reagins were waiting for a counter offer from Boras / Tex, and it simply never came. Anyone who has been involved in business negotiations would understand that. They were right to withdraw their starting offer from the table, when the counter never came.
“The economy” comments are ignorant. If Arte was really worried about the economy (and worried about us fans) then where are the reduced prices for tickets, parking, food, and souvenirs? These prices have only gone up and I don’t see them coming down. Arte is a business man first, and if he can sell 3.4million tickets, and reduce his costs, then he’s a happy man. He’s as greedy as Boras.
Once again we have those who think by having only Tex we can win. Sorry tried that it didn’t work. I said this earlier and I will say it again we need much more than just Tex, we need several key players and role players, minor league prospects like Willits and Mathews should be traded or released and bring in some real professional ball players. In years gone by have the primadona’s would have been out of baseball or in the minors. We have learned to accept mediocrity. Let the Angels do what they do best put a contender together. How many times have we been in the post season, Tex in the lineup gives us what we had last year, wasn’t good enough have we forgotten already?
Everybody ran Jose Guillen out of town. Perhaps Rivera is another example of an overhyped Yankee phenom who escaped the Columbus shuttle via the Nick Johnson deal.
What about Lyle Overbay unloaded from Jays???
Face it Angels fans…. There’s going to be some rebuilding for a while… You need a 1B, SS, 3B and closer.. There’s also a good chance that you trade Vlady before the end of the season… What kind of money do you think he’s going to be expecting coming on the heels of Hunter and Matthews? and rightfully so.. If you’re Vlady and you just saw T.Hunter sign for $90 million, what would you ask for? Maybe $150 mill?
Based on some of the posts here, it sounds like the 2002 bandwagon has just about slowed to stop….
I don’t think that Texiara was the total anwer to the Angels needs, and now that plan A has gone to NY, I would like to see Tony move on plan B, C, D, E & F as promised. I have not heard him say a thing about those plans since before Texiara signed with NY.
I am a Yankees fan, but I’d be the first to say that money does not buy championships. However, the Yankees are taking a beating for what they spent on Texeira yet the Nationals were prepared to offer more. Had they signed Tex, no one would have said anything. Yes, the Yankees have spent an incredible amount of money this offseason, but I love an ownership that is committed to winning. They are playing within the rules of MLB, and they give more to baseball in revenue sharing and luxury tax than any other team. The more they pay, the better it is for all teams including the Angels. As a Yankee fan, I still fear the Angels more than any other team. They’ve had the Yankees number for a few years now, and I don’t expect that to change. Vlad Guerrero remains one of my favorite players, and I fully expect that Tony Reagins will bring in adequate replacements for Tex and Frankie. The Angels were a great team with Tex, but they’ll be a great team without him…
For TC and Mark Whicker: I won’t even be watching the Angels on TV if they insist on going forward without making ANY improvements to what was already a WEAK lineup even before we lost Texiera! I love great pitching as much as the next guy, but our slap-hitting, pop gun offense is just to painful to watch for a whole season. Maybe the radio…..
It seems as if the Angels own the west, but can’t get by the east ( Red Sox ). It’s not this trade or that trade but the fact that the Red Sox are in our head. Call it a curse or whatever !! The facts don’t lie 1986, 2004, 2007, & 2008. Even without Manny the Red Sox replacement killed us ( Jason Bay ), lucky I guess !! So until we have the same swagger that we have when we play the Yankees we’ll never beat Boston. Maybe if we go out and get Manny we could get into their heads ??? He is one of the greatest post season players ever. Just maybe.
Even if the Angels offered 200 mill for 8 years for Tex. The Yanks would come in and out bid the Angels anyway. So let Tex go he wanted to play back east . Get Manny for 3 yrs he’s a better post season hitter than Tex. I know he’s a Boras player. Just put a good 3 yr offer on the table for 3 weeks if Boras and Manny don’t take it let him go and move on. What better way to try an bet the Red Sox than to go out and get Manny.
We’re not signing Manny - Arte Moreno is royally pissed at Scott Boras and he’s taking it out on Manny Ramirez. Why else would they specifically come out and say “NO MANNY!”??
Oh-for the love of the 2002season.It was great to see Big Daddy Vlady hit all those home runs to win the 2002 World Series- I’m sorry that was a nightmare I’ve been having. Big Daddy Vlady has done zero. Remember???Troy Glaus,K-Rod,Troy Percival,GA,Scott Spezio,David Eckstein,Darin Erstad. Please Arte we don’t just want to win the West,we want the world series.Even when the Yankees get into the playoffs its not a successful season unless they win the WORLD SERIES.
