According to this Atlanta Journal Constitution report, USC is pushing hard for Tampa tight end Orson Charles, one of the best remaining football recruits out there.

And Charles has told people that Pete Carroll will allow him to wear No. 7….which is also the favored jersey of Matt Barkley, the Mater Dei quarterback who has already enrolled at USC.

Is that cool with Barkley? Well, Charles and Barkley have become friends during this process.

Georgia and Tennessee are the other schools in the hunt for Charles _ which pits Carroll against his protege Lane Kiffin, USC’s ex-offensive coordinator and now Tennessee’s head coach.

If you believe Sports Illustrated’s profile of Kiffin a couple of weeks ago, there’s never been a more headstrong bull to hit a college football china shop. When he landed at Knoxville’s airport and an aide was 25 minutes late picking him up, Kiffin fired him because, after all, those were 25 minutes in which he was falling behind Florida coach Urban Meyer.

Anyway, Charles could make his decision today.

Cautionary note: The last receiver that USC chased that was this famous in recruiting circles was Vidal Hazelton.
